The Ziggy persona epitomised Bowie’s innovative approach to performance and became an outlet for his outrageous, Japanese-designed outfits and iconic flame-red hair.

The Thin White Duke was Bowie’s 1976 persona, associated with his Station To Station album. He was a haunted character singing songs of romance, dressed in a cabaret-style black silk suit, waistcoat and white shirt.

This iconic pierrot outfit was worn by David Bowie in the music video for hit single 'Ashes To Ashes', directed by Bowie and David Mallet. It was the most expensive video ever made to date, using scenes of saturated colour mixed with black and white.

This outfit, as seen on the cover of the David Live album, was worn on the Diamond Dogs North American tour in 1974. The pale blue baggy suit, complete with braces and spotted jumper, was a marked change from his colourful Ziggy Stardust period.

Although Ziggy Stardust had ended by the time Diamond Dogs came out in 1974, Ziggy was still evident in the styling of new character Halloween Jack on the album cover.

'Five Years' was the first track off glam album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars. The song explains the time in which it will take the Earth to fall apart, with Bowie repeating the words ‘five years’ into a climax at the end of the song.

'Fame' was inspired by John Lennon singing the words ‘aim, aim, aim’ over a Carlos Alomar guitar riff during a session at The Power Plant Studio in New York. Lennon can also be heard on the backing vocals for the track.
