Access at the British Music Experience (BME)

The BME is located within the Grade II listed Cunard building.
There are 2 entrances to the BME
We have an entrance at Pier Head opposite the Ferry Terminal.
At this entrance there are 2 sets of stone steps, the first set have 8 steps and then a landing area, the next set have 6 steps and then level access into an entrance porch. The access door into the reception area is to your right hand side. There are then 3 marble steps to the main ticketing and entrance area.
An alternative entrance has been created which is accessible for our customers who are in wheelchairs.
This entrance is on Brunswick Street. On arrival you will see a ramp and on the door is an intercom, please use this and a member of the BME team will come down, welcome you to our building and assist you.
When you go through the door there is a lift to your left. Take the lift to zero this will take you to the Cunard reception. A member of our team will take you through to the BME space and out to the BME ticketing and visitor services.
Circulation spaces and galleries at the BME are fully accessible.
Off the Ticketing and Visitor Services area there is level access to the Merch Store and the Star Cafe.
Both of the BME ticket desks have lowered counters.
All areas of the exhibition which have audio have integrated loop systems, visitors who wear hearing aids should switch them to the T setting.
There is seating for rest points within the main space. The seating is around the marble pillars that are to the right and left of the main space.
The BME has no dedicated parking. There is street parking on Water Street and Brunswick Street. There is a drop off lay-by at the front of the Pier Head Entrance.
The circulation space within the building is fully accessible for wheelchairs. The BME have a number of wheelchairs which can be reserved on request by contacting our ticketing office on. 03443350655
There are accessible toilet facilities in the following areas:
- Beside the Star Café which is to the right of the main entrance.
- Inside the main space.
- Both accessible toilets have emergency alarms and staff have responsibility for monitoring these areas throughout the day.
Facilities For Those With Hearing Loss
The BME is designed to be a multi -sensory exhibition.
The BME is a self-guided experience however audio guides are available, with printed versions of our audio guide available on request. These can be sent out via email or by post, if requested.
Hearing Dogs are welcome.
Facilities For Those Who Are Blind Or Partially Sighted
We have developed an audio-described audio guide that will be available in April, this is provided free of charge to our visitors who are blind or partially sighted. These guides can be collected at Visitor Services.
Guide Dogs are welcome.
Please note that the lighting levels within some of the galleries are low and in others which have windows such as the Merch Store and the Star Café can be extremely bright.
The BME operates a Free Carers Policy, whereby it offers a free carer ticket to any customer who requires essential assistance to visit our building.
