- Don't Believe The Hype | BME
A temporary exhibition Uncovering the Artwork of Arctic Monkeys’ Debut Album Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not. Uncovering the Artwork of Arctic Monkey's Debut Album 23 January - 22 March 2026 Included with all general admission tickets BOOK TICKETS In 2006, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not became a landmark debut, its smoke-filled cover became one of the most recognisable images in modern music. 20 years to the day after its release, Don’t Believe the Hype invites visitors behind the curtain of the album’s iconic cover, revealing outtakes, inspiration, artefacts and everyday moments that presented youth culture of the time. Far from marketing gloss or staged performance, the album’s artwork emerged from real nights out, shared spaces, waiting around, and unremarkable details that later took on cultural meaning. For the first time, see the material that shaped the cover, including the original photograph that inspired it. - Martin Barre | BME
An evening in conversation with Jethro Tull guitarist, Martin Barre discussing his autobiography 'A Trick of Memory'. An Evening with Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) Monday 17 November, 7.30pm Martin Barre renowned guitarist best known for his long-standing role (43 years) as lead guitarist in the iconic rock band Jethro Tull is coming to Liverpool! Join us as we welcome Martin for an author talk and Q&A. He’s also bringing along his guitar for an acoustic demo and may even play some of your Tull favourites! The evening finishes with an opportunity to meet Martin and get a signed copy of his new autobiography, A Trick of Memory. Barre’s extraordinary guitar skills and innovative techniques have made him a legendary figure in rock music. Martin will tell his story of his musical journey, from his early days to achieving global success with Jethro Tull. Martin started his music journey playing the flute and saxophone before he switched to the guitar. He spent his early career performing in different bands, which helped him refine his skills and create his own distinctive style. A major turning point came in 1968 when Barre joined Jethro Tull, launching an illustrious career. His iconic riff in ‘Aqualung’ is widely recognized as one of the best guitar riffs in rock history and was also voted as one of the top rock guitar solos of all time by Guitar Player magazine readers. He was a key member of Jethro Tull from their second album in 1969 until their last in 2014. His guitar work defined much of the band’s sound, contributing to their success and enduring popularity. Martin played on all of Jethro Tull's studio albums from their 1969 album Stand Up to their 2003 album The Jethro Tull Christmas Album. Beyond his time with Jethro Tull, Martin Barre has pursued a successful solo career, releasing albums that showcase his versatility across rock, blues, and acoustic music genres. Martin Barre’s contributions to music have been recognised with numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance in 1989. His innovative guitar playing has inspired countless musicians across various genres, cementing his influence in the music industry. This is his story. Books will be on sale at the event from Linghams Bookshop. A Trick of the Memory is published on 6 November 2025 in hardback and ebook, priced at £25. Event tickets £10 (books sold separately) Please note, our museum galleries are closed during events.
- Tramps | BME
Doc'n Roll Festival Presents TRAMPS! Film Screening plus Director Q&A TRAMPS! The Death Of Punk, The New Romantics, The Art Of Survival Film Screening plus Director Q&A 1 November - 7pm Rising from the nihilistic ashes of the punk movement in the late 1970s, a fresh crowd of flamboyant fashionistas and irreverent misfits who would later be christened the New Romantics began to materialise on the streets of London. TRAMPS! is a feature-length documentary that looks at how an onslaught of art students arriving in the city in the 1980s resulted in a unique cross-fertilisation of queer culture, visual and performance art, fashion, music and film, and a flourishing of radical, subversive creative output. Repositioning the New Romantics as an art movement rather than an exclusively pop-cultural one, and foregrounding the LGBTQIA+ stories at its core, TRAMPS! traces a genealogy of like-minded artists that predated the era, such as the influential Derek Jarman, and illustrates how they laid the foundations for the creative subcultures that followed. The film’s focus on the defiance and daring, glitter and grit of groundbreaking figures such as Philip Sallon, Judy Blame, Princess Julia, Scarlett Cannon, John Maybury, Mark Moore and Duggie Fields brings a bold and brilliant creative moment to light, and rewrites what we think we know about the era. Four decades on, the creative resilience described by the generation-spanning subjects of TRAMPS! are a direct message of hope to artists at a time when it’s needed most. The film is followed by a Q&A with Director, Kevin Hegge and Joan Burnett - Board member of Homotopia Arts and a previous trustee of Pride in Liverpool. Please note, our galleries are closed during film screenings. There are no ads or trailers, the film starts at 7pm. All tickets £8.
- Epiphone 150 Launch Night | BME
To launch the latest temporary exhibition, featuring acoustic music from Ruby J and the K's. Epiphone 150th Anniversary - Launch Night Wednesday 27 September 2023 - from 7pm THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT Join us for the launch of our new temporary exhibition in partnership with Gibson, celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Epiphone. Epiphone 150th Anniversary: Featuring the Guitars of Noel Gallagher charts the history of this iconic instrument brand through the guitars of one of its most loyal artists, Noel Gallagher. The exhibition runs from 27 September 2023 to 14 January 2024. To mark 150 years of Epiphone, Noel has kindly loaned four of his private guitar collection for this exhibition, including his Epiphone Riviera with Bigsby from the Definitely Maybe album cover and his Epiphone Frontier FT110 used on the (What's the Story) Morning Glory recording. To launch the exhibition on the evening of Wednesday 27 September, BME and Gibson are giving away 150 free tickets. Not only will ticket holders be the first to see the exhibition, but the event will feature live acoustic music from Midlands’ artist Ruby J and Warrington’s finest – The K’s. Midlands’ singer/songwriter Ruby J fuses multiple genres with her own unique style - in 2020 Paloma Faith said "Ruby J is that unique voice". 2022 saw Ruby J make her major UK festival debut at The Isle of Wight Festival and Manchester's Neighbourhood and in March 2023 toured with The Lathums. In addition to this she has secured support slots with indie darlings The K's, Red Rum Club and has shared the stage with Liverpudlian folk rock legend Jamie Webster. Her unique tone has led to early bold comparisons to Amy Winehouse, Macy Gray & Tina Turner amongst others, with her influences ranging from Billie Holiday to Paolo Nutini. In the last 12 months, The K’s have sold out a UK Tour and the Manchester Albert Hall, opened the main stage at Manchester’s Neighbourhood Festival, the Isle of Wight Festival, Leeds and Reading and Kendal Calling. They have played before Liam Gallagher in Greece as well as s upporting Mancunian stalwarts James in Spain and Blondie in the UK and their streams are comfortably in the millions - not bad for a band from Warrington’s sunny Earlestown. However, their pulsing live reputation shouldn’t overlook the sophistication that gives The K’s their immediately identifiable blueprint. Their debut single Sarajevo notched up over 4 million streams and their recent 2023 release Hoping Maybe reached No.2 on the iTunes chart. Tickets are first come first served and can only be booked online from 10am on Wednesday 13 September.

- In Conversation with Alexander Hacke
An evening with musician Alexander Hacke, best known as bassist for Einsturzende Neubaten. An Evening with Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubaten) Friday 10 April 2026, 7.30pm Join us for an evening with musician Alexander Hacke, best known as the bassist in Einstürzende Neubauten, the most influential German underground/industrial band since the early Eighties. Celebrating the launch of his autobiography Blast - Distorted Memories, e xpect stories and anecdotes about his many adventures, mishaps and creative outings with international colleagues such as Mike Patten and Billy Gould of Faith No More, Nick Cave, Unsane, Al Jourgensen of Ministry, Lydia Lunch, Foetus and more. Alexander Hacke became obsessed with classical music at an early age, but ended up dropping out of school and hanging out with punks, squatters, and bohemians in the West Berlin underground scene. After his first music projects under the pseudonym Alexander von Borsig, he joined the newly formed Einstürzende Neubauten in 1980. While the Neubauten became a groundbreaking and hugely successful band, Hacke not only experimented with all kinds of stimulants, but also continued to develop musically: whether as an internationally successful solo artist, collaborating with Crime & the City Solution, as a film composer, or together with his wife, the artist Danielle de Picciotto, with whom he has been roaming the world since 2010. Blast is a dazzling testimony to the wild West Berlin before the fall of the Wall, the rise of Einstürzende Neubauten, and the thrilling life story of a jack-of-all-trades. Hacke recounts international tours and surprising collaborations, as well as his cinematic soundscapes, and offers personal reflections on art and society. He looks back on an artistic career that uniquely combines avant-garde art, pop success, and creative freedom. Alexander Hacke was born in Berlin-Neukölln in 1965. He played in several influential underground bands, including Mekanik Destrüktiw Kommando, Sprung aus den Wolken, and Sentimentale Jugend with his ex-girlfriend Christiane F. He joined Einstürzende Neubauten in 1980, at the age of 14. As a producer and composer, he has created music for theatre productions, documentaries and feature films. Since 2001, he has collaborated with his wife, Danielle de Picciotto, on musical compositions. Copies of Blast will be available to buy on the evening. Tickets £18 (book not included). - Clare Grogan | BME
In conversation with Altered Images' Clare Grogan. In Conversation with Clare Grogan Exhibition closing event 3 November 2022 - 7.30pm To mark the close of our current exhibition celebrating Scottish rock and pop, we’re honoured to welcome performer, actor, author and presenter Clare Grogan to the BME for an evening in-conversation. As a performer who’s been gigging since she first jumped in a Transit van aged 16 and drove from Glasgow to London for a John Peel session, Grogan has barely left the stage in the last two decades. After initially splitting, after six Top 40 hits, in the year of the release of Bite, their third album, Altered Images have been touring, on and off, since 2002. As an actor, she’s appeared in multiple films, TV dramas, comedies and soaps over the years, from (of course) Gregory’s Girl to Comfort and Joy, Waterloo Road to EastEnders, Taggart to Doctors, Red Dwarf to Still Game to Father Ted. And she remains busy on screen – My Old School with Alan Cumming, based on a true story about a Glasgow chancer who went back to his former school as a 32-year-old, has recently appeared on the film festival circuit. As an author she’s written two books, Tallulah and the Teenstars (Number 2 with a bullet in the Waterstone’s Children’s Book Chart) and Tallulah on Tour. As a presenter, she’s hosted film, travel and music shows on television and radio, appearing front and centre on The One Show, BBC Scotland’s Corner Shop Cook Off, STV’s Scotland’s Real Heroes, 6Music, VH1 and BBC Four. There have been radio and theatre comedy/drama adventures aplenty, too, with appearances alongside Josie Long, Mel Giedroyc and, in 2020, a touring production of Neil Simon’s classic Barefoot in the Park. This year, Altered Images released their first album in 39 years – Mascara Streakz. Grogan got to work, write and record round the kitchen table during lockdown with musician husband Stephen Lironi. Their near-neighbour Bernard Butler was only too happy to contribute, and Robert Hodgens (aka Bobby Bluebell), an old friend from the thrilling Glasgow music scene of the early Eighties, also lent a songwriting hand. “When you're approaching a landmark birthday,” begins this indefatigable artist who recently turned 60 years young, “you do start thinking a little bit about how you're perceived. But when people talk to me about slowing down, taking things a bit easier, I just think: NO! What the f***? No, none of that applies to me.” Clare will be in conversation with Ronnie Gurr, CEO of the Scottish Music Industry Association. All tickets £13. On sale Monday 17 October, 10am. Why not upgrade your event ticket to an adult annual pass? For just £3 extra you can visit BME as many times as you like over the next year*. Just select ‘event ticket including annual pass’ at the checkout. * museum entry only
