Live Aid 40: Music, Power & Unity: Launch Night In Conversation with Harvey Goldsmith CBE Wednesday 11th June 2025, 7pm Join us for an evening in conversation with the legendary producer and promoter of the two largest music events in the world ever; Live Aid and Live 8, Harvey Goldsmith CBE. Back in 1985, Harvey was recruited to help turn Bob Geldof’s concert vision into reality but preparations could only begin in earnest when he returned from accompanying Wham! on their groundbreaking trip to China. Harvey says, "I didn't really get a chance to say no. Bob arrived in my office and basically said, 'We're doing this.' It started from there. " Hear Harvey talk about the preparation, promotion and management of Live Aid and Live 8, as well as the legacy work of the Live Aid trust, in this special conversation event which launches Live Aid 40 at the BME. As well as Live Aid and Live 8, Harvey has produced managed and promoted shows with most of the world’s major artists and has most recently worked with Jools Holland, Andrea Bocelli and Hans Zimmer. Harvey has received numerous awards including, CBE, Chevalier des Artes et Lettres from the French Minister of Culture and the Diamond Award for his contribution to The Arts. In July 2012, Harvey received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Brighton. A ticket to the launch event gives exclusive access to the Live Aid 40: Music, Power & Unity (other museum galleries closed). Christmas Film Night: Scrooged 15 December - 7.30pm Francis Xavier Cross (Bill Murray) is a cynical, mean spirited television executive, he treats his loyal assistant with contempt. He just sacked a member of staff on Christmas Eve for simply disagreeing with him, and he's alienated himself from his brother who still insists on inviting Frank to Christmas dinner despite him refusing to go every year. However, Frank is forced to learn the true meaning of Christmas when he's visited by three ghosts. Joining Bill Murray in the cast is New York Dolls frontman David Johansen as the Ghost of Christmas Past. The film soundtrack features songs by U2, Van Morrison and Smokey Robinson. The Art of Darkness: A History of Goth In Conversation with John R obb Thur sday 13 April , 7.30pm Join us as we celebrate the publication of The Art of Darkness: A History of Goth written by John Robb and released via Louder Than War Books. The Minister of Counter Culture and post punk warlord, John Robb is a multi-faceted creature of the night and day. A leading UK music writer where he invented the term ‘Britpop’ and was the first person to interview Nirvana he now runs the Louder Than War website - one of ten biggest music and culture sites in the UK. He is also a musician, TV personality and Eco activist. John will be in conversation with former Plane t X DJ, Marc Jones. The Art Of Darkness - The History Of Goth is the first major and only complete comprehensive overview of Goth music and culture and its lasting legacy. Starting with a night out in a Goth club it then goes on a deep dive around the culture. It explores the context that created it in the post-punk period and also spans the fall of Rome, Lord Byron and the romantic poets, European folk tales, Gothic architecture and painters, and the occult to the modern Instagram influencers. The book is built mainly around the post-punk Goth period with many interviews including the Banshees, Bauhaus, Danielle Dax, Robert Smith, Andrew Eldritch, Adam And The Ants, John Cale, The Damned, Xmal Deutschland, Einsturzende Neubauten, Laibach, Pam Hogg and many others…it looks at the music, style and the political and social conditions that spawned the culture and the great music, fashions and attitudes - clubs that defined it, and is also a first-hand account of being there at the gigs and clubs that made the scene happen. John is also in the acclaimed post punk band, Membranes and has written the best-selling books, Punk Rock - An Oral History , and The Stone Roses and the Resurrection of British Pop . He has also created the Eco Education scheme - The Green Britain Academy and runs the Louder Than Words literary festival and is a key driver in projects to change the fortunes of Blackpool and Stoke and several other northern cities. Books will be on sale at the event, and the in-conversation is followed by a book-inspired DJ set by Marc Jones in the Star Café. Our Star Café-Bar will be open from 6.30pm. Liverpool based artist's Emily Lansley, Luciana Mercer & Rebecca Hawley are a group of womxn who perform under the moniker ‘Stealing Sheep’. They create audio-visual spectacles that explore futurist themes by combining light art, sound sculpting and live instruments. The trio plan to create a mass songwriting experience by taking the form of a conceptual SONG MACHINE as they invite the audience to create a 'Liverpool Song for the future of PLAY' that communicates what PLAY IS... The audience members can send up to six words that will be fed to the SONG MACHINE and processed into a new composition performed live at the British Music Experience on 21 May 2021. LightNight invites audiences to stay up late, as our museums, galleries and studios throw open their doors to stage a free trail of special events for all ages, exploring the theme of Play. Over 75 special events will take place in-person and online including hands-on workshops, exhibitions, tours, talks, installations and much more. Produced by local social enterprise Open Culture, this year’s festival explores how Play can offer a space to create, re-imagine and find novel solutions to global problems.
