An evening with musician Alexander Hacke, best known as bassist for Einsturzende Neubaten. An Evening with Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubaten) Friday 10 April 2026, 7.30pm Join us for an evening with musician Alexander Hacke, best known as the bassist in Einstürzende Neubauten, the most influential German underground/industrial band since the early Eighties. Celebrating the launch of his autobiography Blast - Distorted Memories, e xpect stories and anecdotes about his many adventures, mishaps and creative outings with international colleagues such as Mike Patten and Billy Gould of Faith No More, Nick Cave, Unsane, Al Jourgensen of Ministry, Lydia Lunch, Foetus and more. Alexander Hacke became obsessed with classical music at an early age, but ended up dropping out of school and hanging out with punks, squatters, and bohemians in the West Berlin underground scene. After his first music projects under the pseudonym Alexander von Borsig, he joined the newly formed Einstürzende Neubauten in 1980. While the Neubauten became a groundbreaking and hugely successful band, Hacke not only experimented with all kinds of stimulants, but also continued to develop musically: whether as an internationally successful solo artist, collaborating with Crime & the City Solution, as a film composer, or together with his wife, the artist Danielle de Picciotto, with whom he has been roaming the world since 2010. Blast is a dazzling testimony to the wild West Berlin before the fall of the Wall, the rise of Einstürzende Neubauten, and the thrilling life story of a jack-of-all-trades. Hacke recounts international tours and surprising collaborations, as well as his cinematic soundscapes, and offers personal reflections on art and society. - Clare Grogan | BME
In conversation with Altered Images' Clare Grogan. In Conversation with Clare Grogan Exhibition closing event 3 November 2022 - 7.30pm To mark the close of our current exhibition celebrating Scottish rock and pop, we’re honoured to welcome performer, actor, author and presenter Clare Grogan to the BME for an evening in-conversation. As a performer who’s been gigging since she first jumped in a Transit van aged 16 and drove from Glasgow to London for a John Peel session, Grogan has barely left the stage in the last two decades. After initially splitting, after six Top 40 hits, in the year of the release of Bite, their third album, Altered Images have been touring, on and off, since 2002. As an actor, she’s appeared in multiple films, TV dramas, comedies and soaps over the years, from (of course) Gregory’s Girl to Comfort and Joy, Waterloo Road to EastEnders, Taggart to Doctors, Red Dwarf to Still Game to Father Ted. And she remains busy on screen – My Old School with Alan Cumming, based on a true story about a Glasgow chancer who went back to his former school as a 32-year-old, has recently appeared on the film festival circuit. As an author she’s written two books, Tallulah and the Teenstars (Number 2 with a bullet in the Waterstone’s Children’s Book Chart) and Tallulah on Tour. As a presenter, she’s hosted film, travel and music shows on television and radio, appearing front and centre on The One Show, BBC Scotland’s Corner Shop Cook Off, STV’s Scotland’s Real Heroes, 6Music, VH1 and BBC Four. There have been radio and theatre comedy/drama adventures aplenty, too, with appearances alongside Josie Long, Mel Giedroyc and, in 2020, a touring production of Neil Simon’s classic Barefoot in the Park. This year, Altered Images released their first album in 39 years – Mascara Streakz. Grogan got to work, write and record round the kitchen table during lockdown with musician husband Stephen Lironi. Their near-neighbour Bernard Butler was only too happy to contribute, and Robert Hodgens (aka Bobby Bluebell), an old friend from the thrilling Glasgow music scene of the early Eighties, also lent a songwriting hand. “When you're approaching a landmark birthday,” begins this indefatigable artist who recently turned 60 years young, “you do start thinking a little bit about how you're perceived. But when people talk to me about slowing down, taking things a bit easier, I just think: NO! What the f***? No, none of that applies to me.” Clare will be in conversation with Ronnie Gurr, CEO of the Scottish Music Industry Association. All tickets £13. On sale Monday 17 October, 10am. Why not upgrade your event ticket to an adult annual pass? For just £3 extra you can visit BME as many times as you like over the next year*. Just select ‘event ticket including annual pass’ at the checkout. * museum entry only

- Ian Broudie | BME
An in conversation event to launch Ian Broudie's memoir Tomorrow's Here Today. Tomorrow's Here Today: In Conversation with Ian Broudie Thursday 26 October, 7.30pm BME is delighted to host the book launch event for Ian Broudie’s memoir, Tomorrow’s Here Today – Lighting Seeds, Football and Cosmic Post Punk. Few musicians have lived a musical life as rich as the songwriter and producer Ian Broudie. From recording the glorious uplifting psychedelic pop of his band The Lightning Seeds, to producing bands like Echo & The Bunnymen and The Fall, Ian has journeyed from the energy and potential of the 1970s punk scene to the madness of 90s indie – and out the other side. Throughout nearly fifty years of making music, he has had a front row seat working with generations of fantastic musicians as they created countless ground-breaking records. In Tomorrow's Here Today, he reveals what he has learnt about creativity, how to work with musicians touched by genius, and what it is like to stumble through an exploding industry without losing sight of your dreams. Along the way Ian shares how he wrote the million selling album Jollification and how – along with the comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner – he wrote and recorded the only single in chart history to reach number one in the UK singles chart on four separate occasions. Three Lions has since become the undisputed unofficial anthem of English football, soundtracking heartbreaking defeats as well as the wondrous victories of the Lionesses. Following 2022’s long awaited Lighting Seeds comeback, Ian reflects on a life of cosmic adventures spent in thrall to the power of music Ian Broudie is a musician, singer-songwriter and producer from Liverpool. Well known for his band the Lightning Seeds, co-writing the anthem 'Three Lions' and producing bands such as Echo & The Bunnymen, The Fall & The Coral. Ian will be in conversation with Dave Simpson. The in-conversation will be followed by a book signing. Books are available to purchase on the evening from Linghams Booksellers. All tickets £8. - Vox Phantom Guitar | BME
Ian Curtis' Vox Phantom VI Special guitar is on display from 14 November 2024 at the British Music Experience Ian Curtis' Vox Phantom VI Special Guitar On Display at BME from 14 November 2024 The British Music Experience is putting Ian Curtis’ Vox Phantom VI Special guitar on display to celebrate the enormous contribution of both Curtis and Joy Division to the history of British music. Bought in September of 1979 by Joy Division's manager, Rob Gretton, this Phantom Vox was the very guitar used by Curtis on stage during Joy Division's 1980 European Tour, as well as on the recording of their track "Heart and Soul", and features throughout the music video for the timeless hit "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Curtis can be seen playing this guitar at several venues during the band's legendary 1980 tour. Considered by many as a British cultural icon who had a once-in-a-generation talent, Ian Curtis' musical legacy, even 40 years on, is as strong as ever. Despite a short career, Ian's association with Joy Division as a fascinating and enigmatic figure was instrumental in the band becoming pioneers of the post-punk movement with their debut album 'Unknown Pleasures', released by Factory Records in 1979. Now regarded as one of the best albums of all time, it's said 'Unknown Pleasures' defined not only the city of Manchester, but a moment of social change. Through his complex and melancholic song-writing, his distinct vocals, and commanding stage presence, Ian has managed to leave a lasting influence on musicians everywhere, and the music industry has never quite been the same since. Formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester, Joy Division (originally named Warsaw) consisted of singer and 'song-poet' Ian Curtis, guitarist and keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bass player Peter Hook, and drummer Stephen Morris (who joined in 1977). Inspired by other musicians such as David Bowie, Kraftwerk, Sex Pistols, Jim Morrison, Iggy Pop, Roxy Music and Lou Reed, Ian's vision had a powerful impact on the band, resulting in Joy Division moving away from the typical 'punk sound' of the time, and instead creating their own sound, now considered as the start of the post-punk movement. Following Curtis’ untimely death in 1980, the Phantom Vox stayed with the band, who later that year became the prolific 'New Order', and was looked after and used by Bernard Sumner. Many years later, Bernard gifted the guitar to Ian's daughter Natalie. The guitar is now owned by a private collector who has kindly agreed for the rare object to take its well-deserved place on public display at the British Music Experience. Trustee of the British Music Experience, and Liverpool’s UNESCO Head of Music Kevin McManus commented “It’s a real honour for BME to be able to exhibit such a wonderful piece of music history from one of the UK’s most celebrated artists. Joy Division were one of the most important bands of the punk/post punk era and they remain as one of the most influential bands of the twentieth century. I was lucky enough to see Joy Division play live and it is one of those gigs that will always stay clear in my memory. They were a group that changed many people’s lives and Ian Curtis was at the heart of it: a brilliant song writer with a mesmerising stage presence and haunting vocals. By exhibiting this very special guitar we can pay our tribute to one of the UK’s greatest ever groups and hopefully encourage more visitors to discover the unknown pleasure of Joy Division. ” The BME is adding the guitar to its collection and it will go on display from 14 November 2024. We will will be marking the occasion with a special evening film screening of the 2007 biopic, Control, on Thursday 28 November. During the evening event, the guitar will be available to view for all ticket holders.
