Epiphone 150th Anniversary - Launch Night Wednesday 27 September 2023 - from 7pm THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT Join us for the launch of our new temporary exhibition in partnership with Gibson, celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Epiphone. Epiphone 150th Anniversary: Featuring the Guitars of Noel Gallagher charts the history of this iconic instrument brand through the guitars of one of its most loyal artists, Noel Gallagher. The exhibition runs from 27 September 2023 to 14 January 2024. To mark 150 years of Epiphone, Noel has kindly loaned four of his private guitar collection for this exhibition, including his Epiphone Riviera with Bigsby from the Definitely Maybe album cover and his Epiphone Frontier FT110 used on the (What's the Story) Morning Glory recording. To launch the exhibition on the evening of Wednesday 27 September, BME and Gibson are giving away 150 free tickets. Not only will ticket holders be the first to see the exhibition, but the event will feature live acoustic music from Midlands’ artist Ruby J and Warrington’s finest – The K’s. Midlands’ singer/songwriter Ruby J fuses multiple genres with her own unique style - in 2020 Paloma Faith said "Ruby J is that unique voice". 2022 saw Ruby J make her major UK festival debut at The Isle of Wight Festival and Manchester's Neighbourhood and in March 2023 toured with The Lathums. In addition to this she has secured support slots with indie darlings The K's, Red Rum Club and has shared the stage with Liverpudlian folk rock legend Jamie Webster. Her unique tone has led to early bold comparisons to Amy Winehouse, Macy Gray & Tina Turner amongst others, with her influences ranging from Billie Holiday to Paolo Nutini. In the last 12 months, The K’s have sold out a UK Tour and the Manchester Albert Hall, opened the main stage at Manchester’s Neighbourhood Festival, the Isle of Wight Festival, Leeds and Reading and Kendal Calling. They have played before Liam Gallagher in Greece as well as s upporting Mancunian stalwarts James in Spain and Blondie in the UK and their streams are comfortably in the millions - not bad for a band from Warrington’s sunny Earlestown. However, their pulsing live reputation shouldn’t overlook the sophistication that gives The K’s their immediately identifiable blueprint. Their debut single Sarajevo notched up over 4 million streams and their recent 2023 release Hoping Maybe reached No.2 on the iTunes chart. An evening with musician Alexander Hacke, best known as bassist for Einsturzende Neubaten. An Evening with Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubaten) Friday 10 April 2026, 7.30pm Join us for an evening with musician Alexander Hacke, best known as the bassist in Einstürzende Neubauten, the most influential German underground/industrial band since the early Eighties. Celebrating the launch of his autobiography Blast - Distorted Memories, e xpect stories and anecdotes about his many adventures, mishaps and creative outings with international colleagues such as Mike Patten and Billy Gould of Faith No More, Nick Cave, Unsane, Al Jourgensen of Ministry, Lydia Lunch, Foetus and more. Alexander Hacke became obsessed with classical music at an early age, but ended up dropping out of school and hanging out with punks, squatters, and bohemians in the West Berlin underground scene. After his first music projects under the pseudonym Alexander von Borsig, he joined the newly formed Einstürzende Neubauten in 1980. While the Neubauten became a groundbreaking and hugely successful band, Hacke not only experimented with all kinds of stimulants, but also continued to develop musically: whether as an internationally successful solo artist, collaborating with Crime & the City Solution, as a film composer, or together with his wife, the artist Danielle de Picciotto, with whom he has been roaming the world since 2010. Blast is a dazzling testimony to the wild West Berlin before the fall of the Wall, the rise of Einstürzende Neubauten, and the thrilling life story of a jack-of-all-trades. Hacke recounts international tours and surprising collaborations, as well as his cinematic soundscapes, and offers personal reflections on art and society. He looks back on an artistic career that uniquely combines avant-garde art, pop success, and creative freedom. Alexander Hacke was born in Berlin-Neukölln in 1965. He played in several influential underground bands, including Mekanik Destrüktiw Kommando, Sprung aus den Wolken, and Sentimentale Jugend with his ex-girlfriend Christiane F. He joined Einstürzende Neubauten in 1980, at the age of 14. As a producer and composer, he has created music for theatre productions, documentaries and feature films. In Conversation with Clare Grogan Exhibition closing event 3 November 2022 - 7.30pm To mark the close of our current exhibition celebrating Scottish rock and pop, we’re honoured to welcome performer, actor, author and presenter Clare Grogan to the BME for an evening in-conversation. As a performer who’s been gigging since she first jumped in a Transit van aged 16 and drove from Glasgow to London for a John Peel session, Grogan has barely left the stage in the last two decades. After initially splitting, after six Top 40 hits, in the year of the release of Bite, their third album, Altered Images have been touring, on and off, since 2002. As an actor, she’s appeared in multiple films, TV dramas, comedies and soaps over the years, from (of course) Gregory’s Girl to Comfort and Joy, Waterloo Road to EastEnders, Taggart to Doctors, Red Dwarf to Still Game to Father Ted. And she remains busy on screen – My Old School with Alan Cumming, based on a true story about a Glasgow chancer who went back to his former school as a 32-year-old, has recently appeared on the film festival circuit. As an author she’s written two books, Tallulah and the Teenstars (Number 2 with a bullet in the Waterstone’s Children’s Book Chart) and Tallulah on Tour. As a presenter, she’s hosted film, travel and music shows on television and radio, appearing front and centre on The One Show, BBC Scotland’s Corner Shop Cook Off, STV’s Scotland’s Real Heroes, 6Music, VH1 and BBC Four. There have been radio and theatre comedy/drama adventures aplenty, too, with appearances alongside Josie Long, Mel Giedroyc and, in 2020, a touring production of Neil Simon’s classic Barefoot in the Park. This year, Altered Images released their first album in 39 years – Mascara Streakz. Grogan got to work, write and record round the kitchen table during lockdown with musician husband Stephen Lironi. Their near-neighbour Bernard Butler was only too happy to contribute, and Robert Hodgens (aka Bobby Bluebell), an old friend from the thrilling Glasgow music scene of the early Eighties, also lent a songwriting hand. “When you're approaching a landmark birthday,” begins this indefatigable artist who recently turned 60 years young, “you do start thinking a little bit about how you're perceived. But when people talk to me about slowing down, taking things a bit easier, I just think: NO! What the f***? Le-Verg and Chris Hockenhull Café Acoustic Session 6 July 2023 - 7.30pm Our Café Acoustic sessions return with performances by Lè-Verg and the Freewheelin’ Chris Hockenhull. Lè-Verg are a duo, formed around ten years ago after a chance meeting at a 40th birthday bash in Runcorn. Junior approached Debbie after hearing her sing a Karen Carpenter song and a partnership was born. They have gigged extensively since then playing covers as well as original songs. This gig sees them return to Liverpool after their success at the Liverpool Acoustic song writing challenge in 2022 at Leaf on Bold Street, where they won the audience vote for their song Springs A Dawn . Chris Hockenhull began his Around The World in 80 Years Tour in 1976 - "I didn’t want to get too far ahead of myself you see." From busking in Paris, to running a record store, promoting gigs, writing Raph McTell’s official biography and becoming a recognised authority on Bob Dylan – it’s been a wonderful and varied musical path. This event is taking place in our Star Café Bar and is FREE, no ticket required - seats allocated on a first come first served basis. The Star Café Bar is located off the main museum foyer. Tomorrow's Here Today: In Conversation with Ian Broudie Thursday 26 October, 7.30pm BME is delighted to host the book launch event for Ian Broudie’s memoir, Tomorrow’s Here Today – Lighting Seeds, Football and Cosmic Post Punk. Few musicians have lived a musical life as rich as the songwriter and producer Ian Broudie. From recording the glorious uplifting psychedelic pop of his band The Lightning Seeds, to producing bands like Echo & The Bunnymen and The Fall, Ian has journeyed from the energy and potential of the 1970s punk scene to the madness of 90s indie – and out the other side. Throughout nearly fifty years of making music, he has had a front row seat working with generations of fantastic musicians as they created countless ground-breaking records. In Tomorrow's Here Today, he reveals what he has learnt about creativity, how to work with musicians touched by genius, and what it is like to stumble through an exploding industry without losing sight of your dreams. Along the way Ian shares how he wrote the million selling album Jollification and how – along with the comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner – he wrote and recorded the only single in chart history to reach number one in the UK singles chart on four separate occasions. Three Lions has since become the undisputed unofficial anthem of English football, soundtracking heartbreaking defeats as well as the wondrous victories of the Lionesses. Following 2022’s long awaited Lighting Seeds comeback, Ian reflects on a life of cosmic adventures spent in thrall to the power of music Ian Broudie is a musician, singer-songwriter and producer from Liverpool. Bands as Football Teams, Football Teams as Bands. Bands FC now have over 400 badges, have exhibited in over 20 locations, are proud sponsors of Brinscall F.C. Juniors boys’ and girls’ teams and continue to help multiple bands and organisations raise a lot of money for charity through the sale of their merch. Liverpool-based design team Dorothy's signature mix of music, film and literature inspired prints, products and artwork are sold and exhibited internationally. Their work has been described by the press both as 'beautifully clever' and 'terribly wicked’. This free exhibition will take over our foyer and café, and there will be a launch event to kick things off – more details to follow soon. With two massive No.1s already under their belt, their now iconic Christmas hit The Power of Love went to No.1 on December 8th.
